Welcoming Your New Companion
Bringing a new puppy or kitten into your home is an exciting and joyful experience. Their playful energy and loving nature fill your home with happiness. Just like infants, puppies and kittens require special care during their early stages of life to ensure they grow into healthy and happy adult pets.
At The Highlands Veterinary Hospital, we offer comprehensive puppy and kitten care services designed to help your new companion get the best start in life. From their first vet visit to their vaccinations and socialization, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
Scheduling Your Pet's First Vet Visit
Once your puppy or kitten is settled into their new home, scheduling their first veterinary visit is one of the most important things you can do for their health. This initial visit allows us to assess their overall health, discuss important care steps, and start their journey to a long, happy life.
During this visit, we will:
- Perform a full physical exam to ensure your pet is healthy
- Discuss an appropriate vaccination schedule for your puppy or kitten
- Recommend essential treatments, such as parasite prevention and spaying/neutering
- Talk about socialization and behavior tips to ensure they grow into well-adjusted pets
Protecting Your Pet’s Health With Vaccinations
- Rabies
- DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Parvo)
- Bordetella (Kennel Cough)
- Leptospirosis
- Rabies
- FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia)
Spaying and Neutering
One of the most responsible choices you can make as a pet owner is to spay or neuter your puppy or kitten. This procedure helps prevent unwanted litters and contributes to the overall health and well-being of your pet. Additionally, spaying and neutering can prevent certain health issues, such as uterine infections, prostate problems, and some types of cancer.
We typically recommend scheduling the procedure once your pet has completed their vaccinations and is around six months of age.
